About The Darfur Project

History of The Darfur Project

"A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has..." - Margaret Meade

A refusal to be bystanders as this crisis deepened, a desire to have a more personal impact than the traditional aid channels, and a passion to help from three committed individuals became the genesis of The Darfur Project. Three soon became six, six became ten, ten twenty and within a few weeks the first plane of essential medical supplies took off.

From an original small group of individuals wishing to change the status quo The Darfur Project has grown to include the greater financial community. Following the leadership of PNC and Blue Mountain Capital, who sponsored The Bridge Foundation's first flight, Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch were the next to commit to sponsoring additional relief flights.

With interest from many organizations in the financial community who wanted to be involved, The Darfur Project then hosted a fundraising event in May 2008, co-sponsored by 15 firms. In addition to raising awareness of needs in the Darfur Region, the event generated contributions enough to fully fund the next trip and to give a strong head start on the subsequent one.

To date, The Project has sent five flights, with more to come in the following months.

The Project has sent planes filled with essential drugs, medical supplies, vitamins and nutritional products. We work with tactical partners on the ground to ensure that the relief gets to those most in need, particularly women and children. The ever evolving requirements in the hundreds of camps throughout Darfur and along the Chad border necessitate targeted assistance.

Since its inception, The Project has delivered enough supplies estimated to have provided the following:

Enough Multivitamins to  treat  12,500 children for one month  (at one tablet per day per  child)

Enough Oral Rehydration  Therapy units to produce  101,000 treatments to combat   diarrhea. In children alone, potentially this quantity of ORT could  save 5% of  under-five deaths that occur.

Enough Mebendezole 40,100 people for parasites  and various worm  infections

Enough Amoxicillin to  treat  27,000 adults for infection

Enough Antibacterials to treat 25,250 people for  various infections

Enough AntiMalarial agent to treat 27,600 people for  malaria with  another 13,000  treatment protocols for Chloroquine resistant  malaria  cases C2

21,200 IV bags  of Ringers  Lactate which is often used for fluid resuscitation after  a  blood loss due to dysentery, trauma, surgery, or  a burn  injury.

46,000  disposable syringes and needles
Enough F-100 to produce  17,280 litres of Therapeutic  Milk for the use in the  rehabilitation phase of  severely malnourished children and   adults.

Five flights have delivered $13,846,958in life-saving essential drugs and medical supplies (Three flights to Nyala, Sudan and two flight to Abeche, Chad).

The Darfur Project continues to work with additional sponsors on funding for upcoming airlifts, primarily in the form of institutional contributions. We have created a very streamlined process to ensure that all contributions go directly to airlifts.
